A Shopify migration and POS installation for iconic menswear boutique
Everyone loves a trip down memory lane, and our latest Shopify build was a particular nod to our Kubix heritage. This time we were back in North East Lincolnshire, liaising with a brand based only two miles from where our agency first began.
The brand? Capital Collection - one of Grimsby’s finest independent stores and the home to prestigious designer mens fashion. Tucked away down Grimsby’s side streets, Capital Collection can be found in the heart of Abbeygate, an eclectic shopping arcade of boutiques, cafes and spas. More relaxed than the hustle and bustle of the town, Abbeygate has been home to some of Grimsby’s most successful independents for nearly 40 years. Some of our Kubix members even had parents who shopped at Capital Collection back in the day, which just revealed how iconic this local business had become. And as one of its oldest residents, Capital Collection needed our help.

Having traded down at Abbeygate for over 30 years and built a name for himself in the town, business owner Stewart decided that it was time to improve the store’s online presence. Given Kubix’s reputation for building local businesses in Grimsby and Cleethorpes, it wasn’t long before they reached out to see what we could do. We’d transformed many other brands down at Abbeygate in our early Kubix days, so we knew exactly how best to bring Capital Collection’s website up to scratch.
As with any long-standing business, old habits die hard. Capital Collection had a website that customers could buy from, but the site hadn’t been rebuilt in twelve years of trading, and was getting harder to manage by the day. Built on Magento 1, (a website software that hadn’t had any new major releases since 2014), Capital’s website was starting to let the retail side of the business down and a migration to Shopify was on the cards. The team were manually importing every order they received, including till transactions, which left the whole process a lot slower than it needed to be.
After discussing the benefits of both Shopify and Shopify POS, it was decided that Capital Collection would have a brand new site and have all of their data imported to a new point-of-sale system.

It wasn’t long before our web designs were approved and the full migration could get underway. During the migration, we added all the stock from both Capital Collection and its neighbouring business Oscar’s. This was done so that customers could browse through two stores at once and explore a wider range of clothing - which they rarely did when browsing down at Abbeygate in person. Whilst Capital remains the go-to for designer labels and trending styles, Oscar’s provides clothing for the older discerning gentleman. We created a simple navigation throughout the brands so that any customer could find what they were after with ease.
Our work didn’t stop at the website. As we moved Capital’s retail store onto Shopify POS, Stewart and his team were particularly delighted with the flexibility of their new gift vouchers. Whereas previously they’d had to track gift card sales manually and customers couldn’t use them online, now any customer could purchase a gift voucher and use it wherever they liked. Simple yet effective measures to improve the operation of their business have made a world of difference to their day-to-day business management, and we were happy to see how quickly these improvements were having an effect.
Building Capital Collection’s site gave the oldest members of our Kubix team chance to reflect on how far our agency has come since our early days split between both Birmingham and North East Lincolnshire offices. Local independents across Cleethorpes and Grimsby gave us a chance to grow, and we can never forget those businesses who helped us along the way.
Now we’re proud to have played a part in getting such a pivotal local business ready for the future. We can’t wait to celebrate another 30 years of their success.
