It takes nine months to grow a baby, and twenty-nine to grow a confident Content Executive. My journey with Kubix is one of discovery, development and diversity. It was August 2019 when I applied for an internship within the marketing department of this exciting digital agency I had heard rave reviews about. With a husband who had just launched his own business venture, I had a growing interest in all things marketing and e-commerce. Little did I know that when I was accepted onto the internship with Kubix, I would start a journey of self-discovery that would develop me into the writer that I am today.
Running high on nerves and low on self-confidence, I stepped into the Kubix office in September of 2019 and was thrust straight into the bustling office environment, being welcomed onto the team with open arms and a great cup of coffee. It was the marketing department that would be the place I called home within Kubix, but it was clear from the outset that my internship wouldn’t be limited to this. From writing ad copy for streetwear brands, to dabbling in design and the behind the scenes of Shopify, I was able to get a feel for every aspect of the business (and that was just in my first month!) The next few months would see me get a flavour for even more of the business such as account management and writing blogs.
Yes, this work was new and exciting and I was enjoying learning new skills within the digital world. But it wasn’t just the actual work that was good about this internship. It was experiencing a working culture that was unlike any I’d encountered before. Previous jobs had made me believe that the working environment was a place for gossip, competition and distanced bosses who saw their employees as numbers and figures, not skills and personality. Kubix? It’s the polar opposite. The gossip culture was nowhere to be seen, the people were more focused on teamwork than personal gain, and my CEO Looay actually wanted to get to know who I was as a person - he cared most about passion, knowing the performance would come later.
When I was offered a permanent role within the company at the end of November 2019, it was a no-brainer. Did I want to officially join this exciting, growing agency whose culture was unlike any other I’d experienced? You betcha. I didn’t know what was ahead, but I was ready for it.
I actually had a new role crafted out for me here at Kubix. Having had a taste of my writing through copy for social media, ads and the odd blog for our marketing clients, it was here that the marketing team saw potential. It’s probably worth noting here that I had no idea I was good at writing - as far as I was concerned, the writing genes were used up on my sister before any of them got to me. So to have a role in writing created for me to fill was the confidence boost I needed to embrace this newfound skill.
January 2020 saw content queen Bethany return from her six month stint travelling the globe, and I can pinpoint this as when my development as a writer really began to take shape. As we moved to a new way of working when the coronavirus pandemic forced us to work from home, the year saw me writing a LOT of blogs for our marketing clients. This really helped me to develop and hone my writing skills as I was covering a vast array of topics and tones of voice, from ways to entertain your kids during lockdown, to the reasons why metal detecting is the perfect hobby for seniors!
Having a team around me who really cared about my development was what really helped me to grow as a writer. No matter how many times I would send Bethany over a blog to proofread prefaced with “this one isn’t great” or “I really struggled writing this one”, she would always have faith that it was better than I would care to believe. We would always talk through the things I could improve and work on what I could do next time to take my writing to the next level. I credit this invaluable time of development with growing me into the writer I am today.
2021 saw a move from marketing into the Comms department, now with articles and case studies for our own Kubix website firmly within sight. These would give me the freedom to establish my own writing style, as opposed to tailoring content to specific clients. Still working very much with the marketing department though, I found a lot of enjoyment in writing and creating regular newsletters for clients as well as copy for the many campaigns that we would run throughout the year.
This brings me to where I am now: eight and a half months pregnant with my first child and about to embark on the scariest and most exciting chapter of my life to date. When I look back at who I was when I started at Kubix compared to now, I’m happy to say that my confidence in my ability as a writer is miles ahead of where it was when I began (I’m not sure it even existed back then!). But I don’t think this is merely down to time spent writing. Instead, I believe it’s the people I’ve had surrounding me who have helped shape me into who I am as a content writer. Creating a culture that celebrates and builds each other up through things like our “Champion of the Week” shout-outs not only makes people feel appreciated, but spurs them on to achieve more too.
What life lessons from the past few years will I be taking into motherhood with me? Believe in yourself. And if you can’t, find the people who do. Surround yourself with people who want to see you grow and who have your best interests at heart. Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you're right - so tell yourself you can, no matter how daunting the task ahead might seem. If I establish these things in my life now, at the start of my journey as a parent, my daughter will grow up in an environment where she feels like she can do the same.
Kubix, thank you for my journey so far - for all that you have poured into me and for believing in me every step of the way. You haven’t seen the last of me yet, and I can’t wait to find out what’s in store when I return.
